Conducting effective interviews is a critical part of the hiring process, as it allows the business and the candidate to evaluate one another and determine if the fit is right. Interviews are especially important for small businesses that need to identify candidates who not only possess the necessary skills and experience but will also contribute positively to the company’s culture.

These seven interview questions can help small business owners ensure they make the best possible hiring decisions.

1. Could you tell me about yourself?

This traditional conversation starter remains an effective means to begin interviews. It is an open-ended question that allows candidates to introduce themselves however they might like—and their choices can be revealing. Listen for insights their response provides into their background, experience, and career aspirations. In addition, pay attention to how they present themselves, their communication skills, and whether their values align with your company’s mission.

2. What interests you most about this position and our company?

With this question, you are looking to gauge their level of enthusiasm and commitment. Have they done their research on your company and the responsibilities of the position? They should be able to articulate their motivations and explain how their skills and experience align with the role and the company’s goals.

3. Can you describe a challenging situation you faced at work and how you handled it?

Scenario-based questions like this one can give you insight into the candidate’s experience, beyond the details provided in their application. The question assesses the candidate’s problem-solving skills, resilience, and ability to navigate difficult situations. It also gives you insights into the candidate’s personality, including whether they have a positive attitude and ability to make meaning out of difficult situations.

4. Can you provide an example of a time when you had to work collaboratively to achieve a goal?

This is another scenario-based question that can provide valuable insight for positions that require teamwork—which is just about every position. Listen for candidates who speak with respect about past team members and detail ways they have communicated effectively, delegated tasks, and contributed to the team’s success.

5. Where do you see yourself in five years?

Another traditional question that continues to serve a solid purpose. It can help businesses find out whether they see the opening as a stepping stone in their career or a long-term position.

6. How do you handle criticism?

Understanding how candidates respond to criticism is crucial for assessing their maturity and their ability to handle feedback and grow professionally. Look for candidates who approach criticism with a constructive mindset, welcoming opportunities to learn and improve rather than becoming defensive.

7. Who do you look up to as a role model, and why?

This question can reveal a great deal about a candidate’s values and aspirations. Whether they choose someone who is financially wealthy, ambitious, nurturing, or possessive of other traits, their answer can help you determine whether the candidate’s values and behavior are likely to align with your company’s.
